Thailand is a beautiful country located between the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean, at the heart of Southeast Area. This country has a land mass of 513,000 square kilometer (or about 198,000 sq miles) and has a population of 60 million people. Majority of Thais stay in the fertile Central Plains and in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. Thailand can be divided into Northern and Southern region.
In Northern Thailand, the Western border is mainly mountainous with ranges running along its border next to Burma. The Eastern border is defined by Mekong River that Thailand shares with Lao. Southeast region is hilly with Cambodia as its neighbor.
Southern Thailand is a peninsular where there are long coastline, idyllic offshore islands and fine beaches. This part of Thailand form a major tourist attraction where people overall the world come to relax and enjoy a relaxing resort vacation. Southern Thailand shares it most southern border with Malaysia.
This country has a long history of independence. Unlike all its neighbor such as Burma (Myanmar), Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia, Thailand has never fell to a European colonial power. Even during the WWII, Japanese did not attack nor occupy Thailand.
While Thailand may have a comprehensive road network and good public transportations, the country capital, Bangkok, has some of the world’s worst traffic congestion. If you need to move around this city by road, you should be advised to avoid the rush hours, holidays and weekends.
