Sri Lanka lays a few degrees north of the equator and has a size slightly smaller than Ireland. It only achieved independence from Britain in 1948 and was known as Ceylon until in 1972 when it does away with this colonial name.
The country’s population has a mixture of different religious and ethic groups. It has three official languages in Sinhala, Tamil and English. Majority of the residents are Buddhist Sinhalese (74 percent of the population) and Hindu Tamils (18 percent of the population). There is also quite a sizable population of Christians and Muslims.
Sri Lankans has a life expectancy of 72 years and a literacy rate of 92 percent. The country’s main export is clothing, tea, rubber coconuts and precious gems.
