Spain is the third largest country in Europe. It lies in the southwestern part of Europe and covers the greater part the Iberian Peninsula. In addition to the mainland, the country includes two island groups (the Balearics in the Mediterranean and the Canaries in the Atlantic) and two small territories in North Africa. Spain most southern point faces Morocco across a strait (Gibraltar Strait), making it a bridge between continents (Africa and Europe). The strait of Gibraltar is only 13km wide between the peninsula’s southernmost point and northern Morocco.
Spain shares land borders with France, Portugal, Andorra and Gibraltar (a British territory on the south coast). It has a population of about 41 million and covers an area of approximately 504,780 sq km (194,900 sq miles). Each year, this country receives more than 57 million visitors.

People who know Spain know its bullfighting. This must be Spain most famous activity to the whole world. Bullfighting is actually a sacrificial ritual that pits men against an animal (the bull) bred for the ring. While there are some Spaniards whom oppose bullfighting on the ground of its cruelty, many Spaniards regard toreo, the art of bullfighting, as a noble part of their heritage. In March, Valencia has Las Fallas, a spectacular fiesta that marks the start of bullfighting season. This will lead to Madrid, in May, where there is Fiestas de San Isidro, where bullfights at Las Ventas bullring are the highlights of the taurine year.
