South Africa is the southern most country on the African continent. This country has a huge land mass. It covers an area of about 1.2 million square kilometers or about 470,000 square miles. This is the size of Spain and France combined or roughly 5 times the size of Britain. There are about 41 million people living in South Africa.
To the north of South Africa, it share land borders with independent states of Nambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. There are also 2 sovereign kingdoms, Swaziland and Lesotho, which lies within its border. On the western side of South Africa is the Atlantic Ocean and the eastern side has Indian Ocean. These two oceans meet at Cape Agulhas, Africa’s most southerly tip.
South Africa has nine provinces. It is well link to the rest of the world with international airports at three of its major cities (Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg). The rest of the smaller cities are serves by many domestic airports. International ocean liners call at the port of Port Elizabeth, Cape Town and Durban. And this country has an efficient road network that spans it vast interior to link most cities and towns together.
Visitors of South Africa are drawn to this country by blue skies, a sun-drenched holiday and game parks. Most visitors come here to see the Africa’s Big Five (The term “Big Five” is a hunting jargon for the most dangerous and sought after trophy animals, these are Lions, Black rhinoceros, Buffalo, Leopards and Elephants) living in the wild. And Kruger National Park is the most prime location to see them.
Also noteworthy is a cast in the South Africa Museum in Cape Town. This is actually the ancient footprints discovered at Langebaan, made 117,000 years ago. They are the world’s oldest traces of anatomically modern man, Homo sapiens.
