Scotland forms the northern part of Great Britain. It shares land border with only one country, England, to its south and is separated from the continental Europe by the North Sea. Its neighbors (excluding England) are Ireland to the west, Netherlands, Denmark, Norway and Germany to the east.
Scotland landscape is typically mountainous with the highest peak being Ben Nevis, standing at round 1,350m (4,400 ft) tall. This country is sparsely populated, with only a population of 5 million people. While the land mass of Scotland may be small (the distance from the country far north to far south is about only 400km long), it has a huge coastline, about 10,000km (6200miles) long. This is due to the fact that Scotland has 747 major islands. Almost all of the islands lie in the western or northern coast of the main land. With good road, rail and ferry connections, visiting or exploring the country is pleasant and could not have been easier.
From the bagpipe music, the distinctive national dress (kilt), the beautiful landscape and the many beautiful castles set on small islands, Scotland has created an identity that is unique and easily recognized anywhere in the world.
And while this country may be relatively small size, it has produced many great scientists and inventors. Scotland has John Napier whom created the Logarithm table, Alexander Graham Bell whom invented the telephone and more recently, a team of scientists in Edinburgh Roslin Institute cloned Dolly, the famous sheep which is the first successful clone of an adult animal in the world in 1998.
The country is truly amazing and is not wonder why its can attract people from all over the world to explore and visit it years after years.
