Portugal is situated in the southwest corner of Europe. It occupies roughly 16 percent of the Iberian Peninsula and has a population of just over 10 million. This country shares land border (measuring roughly 1,300 kilometers or 800 miles in length) with only one neighboring country, Spain, which is located to its north and eastern part. Southern and western part of Portugal is a stretch of coastline that is approximately 830 kilometers or 500 miles and meets the Atlantic Ocean. This country has two other Atlantic archipelagos included in its territory, Madeira and Azores.
Madeira archipelago has two inhabited island (Madeira and Porto Santo) and lies about 965 kilometers or 600 miles to the southwest of Lisbon. Azores archipelago is a set of volcanic islands that lies more than 1,300 kilometers (about 800 miles) to the west of Lisbon.
Portugal is one of the oldest nation states in Europe that is found in 1139, nearly 350 years before Spain was found. Its 10 million people speak their own language and follow their own unique cultural traditions. The country has two great rivers in Douro and Tagus. Both rise in Spain and then flow westward across Portugal to the Atlantic Ocean. At the mouth of these two rivers are two of Portugal major cities, Lisbon (Tagus) and Oporto (Douro). For years, one of Portugal best-known export, the Port Wine, comes from Douro valley. Today, fine Portugal table wines are at the forefront of Portugal wine making.
