New Zealand is one of the most isolated countries in the world and the last of the significant landmass to be populated by human being. This is the nation of immigrants, lying 1,600 kilometers to the east of Australia.
The country consists of two large islands (North Island and South Island) and a number of smaller ones. Its total land area is about the size of Japan, roughly 270,500 square kilometers. The two main islands are separated by Cook Strait with two-third of its 4 million residents living in the North Island. Auckland is the country’s largest city and the world’s most populous Polynesian center. Wellington is the capital found at the southernmost tip of the North Island.
The South Island has Alps mountain chain running almost the entire length of the island. East of the alps is dry and non-forested while the Western side has higher rainfall with mountains, magnificent forests, lakes and glaciers. Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island with 330,000 residents. It has good international travel links.
The first arrivals in New Zealand are the Maoris less than 1,000 years ago while the Europeans only arrived just 350 years ago. These two groups of early settlements have come together and forged a unique identity out of their common experiences.
