The Netherlands is situated in Western Europe, sharing land border only with two countries, Belgium to the south and Germany to the east. Its north border and west border are all surrounded by the North Sea.
This country is popularly known to the rest of the world as Holland. In reality Holland, more accurately North Holland and South Holland, comprises just 2 of Netherlands 13 provinces. The country has an area of about 42 000 square kilometer. It coastline has been changing over the years. Since the completion of Deltawerken (Delta Works – a massive operation to protect Netherlands coastline from the raising sea), the coastline is about 800 kilometer long. A population of about 16 million people lives in this country.
Netherlands has many major waterways. About one-sixth of its total area is covered with water. The country also has excellent road and rail systems. These well connected networks make the country an important gateway to the rest of Europe (particularly to Germany). In particular, this country has many world-class sea ports, such as Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
Netherlands are well known for their picturesque windmill and tulips flower. Interestingly, tulips were actually introduced to Holland by Turkey in the early century.

Amsterdam is the capital of Netherlands, located at the junction where river Amstel and river IJ. It is about 20 km (12 miles) from the sea and is close to Schiphol international airport.
