French Polynesia is made up of several groups of Polynesian islands lying in the Southern Pacific Ocean. Together, these islands formed the French "overseas collectivity" with a designation of “overseas country”, to reflect the autonomy these islands enjoys from France.
French Polynesia has a total land area of 4,167 square kilometers. These islands are spread over 2.5 million square kilometers of ocean. The islands in French Polynesia are grouped into:
- Austral Islands
- Bass Islands often considered part of the Austral Islands
- Gambier Islands often considered part of the Tuamotu Archipelago
- Marquesas Islands
- Society Islands (including Tahiti)
- Tuamotu Archipelago
The most famous and populous of these islands is Tahiti.
Aside from Tahiti, other important atolls and islands in French Polynesia include Bora Bora, Huahine and Moorea.
French Polynesia has a moderately developed economy depends mainly on tourism and financial assistance of mainland France. Tourist facilities are well developed and are available on the major islands. Two other famous exports of French Polynesia are noni fruit (discovered for its medicinal uses) and black Tahitian pearls.
