Australia is the sixth largest country in the world in term of land area. It has about 5 % of the world land's surface and stretches more that 4,000km from east to west and 3200 km from north to south. Its coastline is more than 36,000 km long.
This country is the last great landmass that was discovered by Europeans. But long before the British claimed it or the first European landing, the continent has already been inhabited for ten of thousands of years. Australia Aboriginal society has a continuous cultural history than is more than 50,000 years old. Its first human is believed to have crossed the sea from Southeast Asia area.
Immigration, from all parts of world, has a great influence and impact on Australia and its people. Its multicultural mix is one of the most diverse in the world. Today, there are about 20 millions people in Australia. 23% of this population was foreign-born. Early immigrants, after World War II, have largely come from Italy and Greece. But recent immigrants have come mostly from United Kingdom, China, India, New Zealand and Africa. Population density of Australia is the lowest in the world.
